National Engineering Month (NEM) in Ontario is gearing up to be an incredible celebration of engineering innovation, with a mix of exciting new activities and opportunities for students, professionals, and the broader community. Whether you’re passionate about leading change, developing your skills, or connecting with others in the engineering world, there’s something for everyone this year. Here’s a look at what’s new and how you can get involved in this year’s biggest engineering event in Ontario.
The Student Impact Challenge
One of the most anticipated additions to NEM Ontario this year is the Student Impact Challenge. This competition is designed to inspire Ontario’s engineering students to tackle real-world challenges and showcase their innovative solutions. Students can lead impactful events—like hackathons, community outreach, or workshops—addressing today’s critical issues in health, sustainability, technology, and accessibility. The challenge encourages students to think outside the box and offers a hefty cash prize, with $4,000 awarded for the top event! There are also 5 early-bird cash prizes available for teams that register before December 31, 2024. The challenge is open to post-secondary students enrolled in engineering degree programs in Ontario, so encourage your students to get involved.
This year, the weekly themes are getting a refresh to align with the latest and most exciting developments in engineering. Each week’s theme focuses on a different trending topic, allowing participants to explore diverse areas within the field, from advancements in green technology to cutting-edge artificial intelligence. These themes serve as a perfect guide for event leaders who want to align their activities with current trends and spark meaningful discussions.
For the first time, NEM Ontario is launching the Engineering Discovery Challenge – an engineering scavenger hunt for the whole family! This activity encourages people of all ages to explore their surroundings and discover engineering in everyday life. Participants will look for engineering marvels around them, fostering curiosity and appreciation for how engineering shapes our world. The scavenger hunt makes NEM Ontario accessible and fun for all, sparking interest in the field among kids, families, and the general public alike.
The success of NEM Ontario depends on the creativity and dedication of its amazing event leaders. This year, we’re calling on both post-secondary students and professionals to take part in leading events. As an event leader, you’ll be at the heart of NEM, helping to inspire others and create memorable experiences.
