Peterborough County E&D Department Overview:
Peterborough County is an upper tier municipality representing eight local municipalities and two First Nations Groups. Serving a population of approximately 64,000 residents plus a large seasonal population distributed over an area of 4,000 square kilometres. The County builds, operates, repairs, and maintains a transportation network of 700 kms of roads and over 150 bridges and large culvert structures.
The Engineering and Design division at Peterborough County is responsible for all capital projects and corridor control activities related to our infrastructure (e.g. roads, bridges, traffic signals, stormwater, etc.). This includes surveying, design, construction, contract administration and inspection, traffic counts, traffic signals, corridor control permits, and utility coordination. The Engineering and Design division is responsible for the implementation of the Transportation Master Plan to guide and facilitate long term growth. As well, the division works with eight lower tier municipalities, and two First Nations, as well as other local partners to enhance community collaboration by assisting with designing construction projects, providing technical knowledge and support for grant applications, and many more activities.
The Civil Engineering Students that work at Peterborough County assist with the design and inspection of various road and bridge construction projects. Under the supervision of senior staff, students assist with the preparation of engineering design drawings and specifications, construction inspection, culvert condition inspections, surveying, traffic counts, and collection of GPS data.
The Engineering and Design division at Peterborough County has had many of its summer students pursue full-time careers at our organization. Including Doug Saccoccia, Manager, Engineering and Design. He started as a student at Peterborough County 16 years ago. Peterborough County staff provide opportunities to fuel student’s passion for public service, collaborate with dynamic teams, and foster continuous learning and growth.
