National Engineering Month Ontario – Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have a question about National Engineering Month (NEM) Ontario events? We’ve put together a list of common questions and answers to help guide you whether you’re looking to lead or attend a NEM Ontario event.

General Questions

What is engineering & engineering technology all about?

Engineering and technology are about more than building bridges and memorizing formulas. Engineering and engineering technology professions are collaborative, creative, and leverage communication skills to solve humanity’s wicked problems; turning ideas into a reality and making a difference.

What is NEM?

During the month of March, across Canada, the engineering and technology community lead events to celebrate and support one another. 

What is NEM Ontario? 

NEM Ontario works with partners & volunteers across the province to hold professional development events that are specifically designed for the engineering community. 

Each week in March will focus on a different topic area: 

  • Week 1 (March 1 – 5): The P.Eng. Designation
  • Week 2 (March 6 – 12): Lifelong Learning
  • Week 3 (March 13 – 19): Spotlight on the Engineering Student Challenge
  • Week 4 (March 20 – 26): Equity, Diversity & Inclusion
  • Week 5 (March 27 – 31): Engineers & Politics

How can I get involved with NEM Ontario?

You can get involved with NEM Ontario in four ways. You can: 

  1. Lead an event
  2. Attend an event
  3. Partner with us 
  4. Engage with us on social media using the #NEM2023 hashtag or join our mailing list for the latest updates

Why should I get involved?

Being part of NEM is an opportunity to share your passion for engineering with diverse students and young professionals; to widen their perceptions, build their curiosity and help them feel a sense of belonging within these professions.

Where are NEM events held?

NEM Ontario events are primarily held online although some events will be happening in person. 

When will the NEM 2023 event calendar be live? 

The event calendar for NEM 2023 will be posted by mid-January. Join our mailing list or follow us on social media to get the latest updates. 

How do I register for a NEM event? 

Stay tuned to our calendar of events page and explore events led by our amazing volunteers. To find out more about an event, click the + below the event date and read the description. To reserve your spot, click the <<attend>> button and fill out your registration. You will be emailed the Zoom link and it’s recommended to copy the link directly into your calendar.  

How much does it cost to attend NEM events? 

All NEM Ontario events are free to attend and you can attend as many NEM Ontario events as you like. We hope you will show your support for the engineering & technology community and attend as many events as possible. .

How do I lead a NEM Ontario event?

Applications are open from Semptember 1, 2022 to October 31, 2022. 

Who can host an event?

Anyone with a passion for engineering & technology can apply to host a NEM Ontario event.  

Is there funding available?

There is funding available for approved NEM Ontario events. Please see our lead an event page for more details.

What type of event should I organize?

That is totally up to you, however we do recommend that they fall within the theme of lifelong learning. Visit the lead an event page to learn more and apply. 

What is the Engineering Student Challenge?

All Ontario post-secondary students enrolled in an engineering degree program are invited to host an event in March for the NEM Ontario Engineering Student Challenge. Teams of up to 5 students can host an event or series of events and compete with other Ontario teams for a chance to win one of three cash prizes: $2,500 for first place, $1,500 for second place, and $1,000 for third.

Who can participate in the Engineering Student Challenge?

To qualify, students must be currently enrolled in an engineering degree program at an Ontario college or university.

What is the deadline to sign on as a partner? 

The deadline to become a #NEM2023 partner is December 15, 2022. Spaces are limited, so inquire today.
