J.L. Richards & Associates Limited: 70 Years of Engineering Innovation, Collaboration, and Excellence

J.L. Richards & Associates Limited (JLR) is a multidisciplinary firm that offers high-quality engineering, architecture, and land use planning services in house across a wide array of business markets and geographies. With all our design disciplines under one roof, we thoroughly and efficiently balance the diverse and often competing individual system requirements to achieve the best overall design solution.

Established in Ottawa in 1955, we continue to be a proudly Canadian, employee-owned company that embraces individuals with outstanding talent, skills, and experience from all over the world. This diverse composition not only enhances our capabilities but also contributes to the culture of collaborative cooperation that sets JLR apart. With regional offices located in Kingston (1971), Sudbury (1974), Timmins (2001), North Bay (2005), Guelph (2013) and London (2025), our firm is well-positioned to undertake a wide range of projects and ensure their timely delivery.

JLR believes in the mutual benefit of having well-educated thought leaders in broad topics related to our business. JLR encourages self-directed exploration of postsecondary programs and will reimburse certain costs associated with higher learning, with a manager’s approval. In addition to this, JLR provides other training which includes:

  • Helping JLR professionals with obtaining the required hours for continuous professional development programs, including training developed by our Project Delivery team.
  • Providing Lunch & Learns on a wide variety of topics which are typically open to all staff.

Our Career Mentorship Program is aimed to facilitate the flow of information throughout our multifaceted organization to actively practice the diffusion and propagation of our unique culture. We pair employees up with a senior staff member from a completely different discipline to foster collaboration and communication between our multidisciplinary firm. The program has the added benefit to our employees to make a connection with someone they might not interact with regularly. Mentees and mentors benefit from a mutual relationship of learning.

JLR has a track record of delivering and ensuring quality in our projects across all markets. Over 80% of our business comes from repeat clients and referrals. JLR’s reach extends across North America and the world with successful projects completed in over 75 countries. Our markets include:

  • Alternative Delivery
  • Buildings
  • Environmental Infrastructure
  • Indigenous
  • Industrial
  • Innovative Energy
  • Mining
  • Municipal Infrastructure & Planning

Seventy years of experience have shown us that collaboration provides the best possible project results. Many of JLR’s projects have received local, national, and international awards. Exceptional work and customer service are what define JLR today. Together with our clients, we continue to design and create the innovative projects of tomorrow.
