A National Engineering Month Ontario welcome message Professional Engineers Ontario:

Welcome everyone to the National Engineering Month (NEM) Ontario website!

NEM is a national celebration where each March, all the provincial engineering regulators join Engineers Canada in organizing events to generate public awareness by highlighting all things engineering. Through NEM, we seek to focus volunteer energies on offering a Canada-wide opportunity for youth to engage with many disciplines of engineering and engineering technology, so they may see where their skill set and interests best fit, and what they need to do to excel in the engineering and engineering technology professions.

In Ontario, we tackle NEM as a coalition for strength in numbers. Our team includes the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) and PEO as founding partners; the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) as flagship event coordinator and fund raising partner; and Engineers Without Borders (EWB) as “Water for the World” event organizers and our service provider.

As the then-new Registrar for Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO), I was impressed by how well the National Engineering Month (NEM) 2015 campaign went last March. Thank you to every volunteer who contributed their time and energy towards the success of NEM events in Ontario. Without your dedication and effort, Ontario’s NEM 2015 campaign would not have been as amazing as it was! Thank you folks!

There were many highlights of the 2015 campaign. For example, we:

  • held 276 NEM events across Ontario compared to a high of 187 events in previous years– a 47% increase;
  • engaged with 30,000+ people (youth, students and young professionals) compared to 27,100 in 2014;
  • Several of these events yielded great contributions to our network’s collective outreach repertoire. Designing and running Innovation events/materials was formally established as a leadership development activity; and
  • expanded our social media presence beyond Facebook and Twitter to Instagram to further connect people to events and to spread NEM’s message across Ontario!

I know there are exciting new NEM initiatives coming in 2016 and, frankly, I simply cannot wait. If you have never gone to a NEM event before, I urge you to make 2016 the year you do. I know you will not be disappointed. To the NEM Ontario Steering Committee, thank you. Please keep up the good work. I look forward to participating in the events of NEM 2016!

Yours sincerely,

Gerard McDonald, P.Eng.
