NEM Kick Off: Understanding the True Value of Engineering Services and How to Boost Them

Being an engineer is a profession and a calling, and as such engineers have become highly sought after across all industries, including finance, tech, transportation, and more. However, while their skills have never been in higher demand, their contributions within traditional engineering domains continue to be undervalued.

This is concerning because of the pivotal role of engineers in ā€œpoweringā€ Ontario and what a lack of investment in ā€œengineeringā€ means to the future of our economy and community. If the top engineers are seeking other professional pursuits, who will be left to attack the greatest challenges of our time like climate change, sustainable urban development, food scarcity, etc.?

The critical questions for the future of the profession are why this undervaluation exists, and what can be done to improve the careers that can be had in traditional engineering, so we do not lose our best to more lucrative opportunities.

Also, why does engineering in Canada seem to have a lower perception of value than in other jurisdictions, making it so our brightest are drawn elsewhere?

If the answers to these questions are important to you and the success of your business, then please join us for a discussion about the changes we need to make to future-proof the engineering profession. We are looking to have an honest look at the factors influencing our industry and its desirability in the future, and we welcome your participation.

The Journey to Becoming a P.Eng in Ontario as an Internationally Trained Engineer

In May 2023, the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) introduced a competency-based assessment model for internationally trained engineers, eliminating the requirement for Canadian work experience for P.Eng licensing. This significant change opens professional opportunities for Ontario employers and globally trained engineering professionals.

Before earning my P.Eng in Ontario, I spent five years as a licensed P.E. in New York, USA. Due to my work being US-based, I lacked Canadian experience, a barrier now removed by PEO’s updated licensing process.

I am eager to share my journey through this new licensing pathway to inspire engineers, whether trained in Canada or elsewhere, to leverage their skills and contribute to Canada’s advancement through professional licensing.

Tools to Bridge Skill Gaps and Backlog Challenges in Civil Engineering

In the era of intelligent infrastructure, the civil engineering sector faces challenges like skill shortages, growing backlogs, and aging infrastructure.

According to the 2024 Q1 Engineering Business Sentiment by ACEC Research Institute, in the USA

  • 9% of positions remain unfilled
  • There is a 1-year backlog
  • 51% of the firms are turning down work due to skill shortage
  • More than 73% of firms are concerned with wage pressures
  • Only 20% of firms have an AI strategy

The situation in the USA is representative of the challenges that are not unique to North America.

These obstacles represent an opportunity for innovative solutions to offer a way forward.

After virtually attending the 2023 Bentley Going Digital Awards, I was inspired by the successful projects, including:

  • The I-70 Floyd Hill To Veterans Memorial Tunnels Project in Colorado, USA: It saved USD 1.2 million and 5,500 hours in coordination time
  • ā€ÆTheĀ  Hengyang – Yongzhou Expressway in Hunan Province, China: It saved CNY 40 million in costs and was expected to be completed one year ahead of schedule
  • The N4 Montrose Interchange in Mpumalanga, South Africa: It saved 2,500 hours in design and an estimated ZAR 2.5 million in design costs.

I will share what I learned from studying successful projects from around the world. Drawing on a metaphor, as bridge support allows for smooth crossings over dynamic waters, engineering teams can navigate industry challenges with proper and innovative strategies.

Intersectional Perspectives on Engineering and Technologyā€™s Ability to Contribute to Social Justice

Join Michelle Liu (they/them), P.Eng, JD, MASc as they moderate a discussion on engineeringā€™s potential to advance social justice. The session will explore intersectional perspectives on the ways in which engineering and technology intersect with social justice issues, highlighting potential biases in designs and offering new insights into existing engineering processes. The event, for both industry and academia, is an opportunity to learn from the next generation of engineers and (re)consider engineeringā€™s ability to contribute to social justice.

The panel will be composed of (see bios below):

  • Michelle Liu (they/them), P.Eng, JD, MASc, LEED-GA (moderator)
  • Shivani Nathoo (she/her), P.Eng, BASc
  • Vanessa Matta (she/her), EIT, BASc
  • Allie Kennington (they/them), EIT, BASc

Michelle Liu (they/them), P.Eng, JD, MASc, LEED-GA: Michelle is a Queer, racialized, and non-binary engineer, soon-to-be lawyer, speaker, consultant, and researcher. Michelle earned their Honours BASc and MASc in civil engineering from the University of Waterloo and has worked in engineering consulting and construction management. Michelle also holds a law degree (JD) and is pursuing their engineering PhD that they began simultaneously as their law degree at the University of Ottawa. Michelleā€™s research, for which they received both the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship and the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Scholarship, uses sociolegal frameworks to understand the relationship between technological designs and the dominant norms in engineering such as masculinity and meritocracy. Michelleā€™s current volunteer work includes serving as Co-Chair of the Ontario Society of Professional Engineersā€™ Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility Task Force and a Councillor of Professional Engineers Ontario. Engineers Canada named Michelle one of thirteen EDI Leaders in Engineering Workplaces in 2021-2022. Michelle and their spouse co-created and co-fund the Liu-Kennington Award for the 2SLGBTQ+ Engineering Community, the first of its kind in Canada. Michelle lives and works on the sacred land of the Algonquin Anishinaabe Nation.

Shivani Nathoo (she/her), P.Eng, BASc: Shivani is a Professional Engineer and a Planner at the Independent Electricity Systems Operator (IESO). Prior to the IESO, she worked for Hatch Ltd as a Smart Grid and Asset Management EIT. She graduated from the University of Toronto in 2019, where she did Engineering Science with a major in Energy Systems, and served as the President of the Engineering Society. Since her time in high school, Shivani has been very passionate about improving equity societally, but especially in the engineering profession. Shivani is very passionate about looking at engineering from a holistic point of view including, ESG (environmental, social, and governance) thinking, ethics, and diversity, inclusion and equity. She is currently co-chair of the Ontario Society of Professional Engineersā€™ Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility Task Force, and an Engineers Canada 30 by 30 champion. She has also previously sat on the University of Toronto Faculty of Applied Science and Engineeringā€™s Faculty Council, and Decanal Task Force on Mental Health.

Vanessa Matta (she/her), EIT, BASc: Vanessa is a civil engineering EIT in her final year of law school at the University of Ottawa and holds a BASc in civil engineering from the same institution.
