Engineering Design Challenge
March 6 @ 9:00 am - 2:00 pm
Volunteers from the Lakehead Chapter of Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) and the Ontario Association of Certified Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) would like to invite Grades 5 – 8 students in your school to come to Lakehead University Bora Laskin Faculty of Law Gymnasium to participate in a team design competition.
These activities are held to celebrate National Engineering Month (March), sponsored by the National Engineering Month Ontario Steering Committee (NEMOSC). The competition will be run by volunteers from the Lakehead Chapter of PEO, OACETT and Lakehead University Engineering Student Society (ESS).
The competition rules are enclosed for your information.
The competition will be similar to the Fluor Event shown at the following link:
The competition will be held on Friday, March 6th, 2020, at the Lakehead University Bora Laskin Faculty of Law Gymnasium.
The schedule is as follows:
Friday, March 6th, 2020
9:30 a.m. – 9:55 a.m.: Students arrive
10:00 am: Intro, Safety Instruction, and Building of Ball Launchers.

Grades 5 to 8 students in all elementary schools in the Thunder Bay area are welcome to enter multiple teams. Teams are limited to 4 students each. There will be a grade 5/6 category and a grade 7/8 category.
Due to crowd control and space limitation, the organizer must restrict the number of participants, on the strict order of the Ontario Fire Marshal.
IMPORTANT: Please indicate the number of students attending as soon as possible to reserve space. Organizers will confirm your school’s spots by email or by phone calls. Without such confirmation, your school may be turned away. In the 2019 NEM event, there were 876 Thunder Bay students that applied but due to limitations only 300 could attend the event. If we reach capacity for the event, we will limit the submission to 40 students per school.
Transportation and meals are the responsibility of your school and/or the students. The Organizer will provide prizes.
Please use the attached entry form to enter. There is no maximum for how many teams a school is allowed to enter for the competition, however we may limit the amount due to facility limitations.
